Alberta Race Team
The Alberta Alpine Racers, a racing division of CADS - ALBERTA, started in 1987. Since then, individuals with different disabilities from all over Alberta have come together to form Team Alberta. Individuals bring their own unique challenges to the sport, but do not let their disability stand in their way. The team consists of athletes with cerebral palsy, visual impairment, quadriparesis, amputations and spina bifida. Members come from their local chapters of CADS - ALBERTA, from which they learned to ski at Friday-night or weekend classes. As they advanced, they decided whether or not to pursue competition. The team is made up of elite racers from across the province. From the provincial team, each racer has the chance to move up to the national team, in hopes of being able to compete on the world stage.
What CADS - ALBERTA provides
To support these athletes the Alberta CADS board has secured funding through the Province of Alberta and other private sponsors in the magnitude of $60,000 per year. Alberta provides a part-time Race Coach - Plamen Stamov, an assistant and other volunteers, transportation from Calgary to the various events this includes a trailer to haul the equipment, insurance for the race team, part-time admin staff to assist with the team, high-end sit skies and other equipment - gates, drills, fencing etc.
CADS - ALBERTA Racers
We will have 2 levels - “A” level and “B” level. The “A” team will travel to all events - BC Provincials, Columbia Crest Cup held at Winter Park, Colorado, US Nationals, Canadian Nationals and New Zealand Nationals, plus other FIS Races
The “B” team will travel to BC Provincials plus other FIS Races Based on the previous year’s performance racers will be placed on the “A” team, the remainder will be placed on the “B” team. To move to the “A” team the racer must demonstrate ability (time trials and BC Provincials), be fit for the race team and have the motivation to be on the “A” team.
To remain on the “A” team the athlete cannot miss more that 3 training dates or be absent for more than 1 of the events listed above (Injuries or pre-arranged agreements with the coach will be excluded).
The expectation for the “B” team is a strong commitment to remain on the team - must attend the BC Provincials and by not missing more than 5 training dates (Injuries or pre-arranged agreements with the coach will be excluded).
Starting in November, almost every Saturday and Sunday, Coach meets the athletes at Canada Olympic Park 7 or 8am and then the team heads out to Nakiska Ski Resort.
